“This is America’s Team”
After an intense few days at the Olympic Trials in San Jose, California, the 2012 USA Olympic gymnasts have been chosen! The men’s team was selected earlier on Sunday and will include Jake Dalton, Danell Leyva, Sam Mikulak, John Orozco, and former Olympian Jonathan Horton. The replacement athletes will be Chris Brooks, Steven Legendre, and Alexander Laddour. The women’s team will include Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, and National All-Around Champion Jordyn Wieber. The replacement athletes will be Sarah Finnegan, Anna Li, and ElizabethPrice.
At the 2008 games in Beijing, both the men’s and women’s teams medaled in the team competition but failed to grab the gold. With multiple mistakes on the final day of team competition, the women’s team settled for silver after a tight race with China for the gold. Quite the opposite was true for the men’s team who entered the games with low expectations and fought their way to the podium to take home the bronze medal behind China and Japan.
Now that the athletes have been chosen, the stage is set for the games in London. With only one returning Olympian on either team, USA Gymnastics will feature many young athletes that have recently been medaling in both national and world competitions. After coming so close to winning the gold four years ago in Beijing, the teams are hopeful for this year’s games in London. The Opening Ceremonies are set for July 27th, and the gymnastics competition will begin the following day.
Following the London games, the national teams will be touring across the nation on the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastic Champions. The tour will be stopping in Dallas on October 6th at the AA Center. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 20th.
